Data Analytics Helps Improving Academic Performance

Data Analytics Helps Improving Academic Performance, Education empowers communities and helps them pave the way out of poverty. The last decade has witnessed major progress globally towards increasing access to education and school enrollment, particularly for girls. However as per reports, about 260 million children were out of school in 2018, which just went downwards with the advent of Covid 19.

By April 2020, an approximate 1.6 billion children had to leave schools. About 369 million children had to start looking for alternate sources for nutrition as mid-day meals were no more available. It was for the first time that children in such large numbers had to stay out of school. The continued efforts towards changing their futures came to a still.

However, the global community couldn’t leave it to that. And with collective efforts started looking for solutions. The search led thought leaders to the decision of employing data science, so the world can continue in its quest of empowering every child. It was right at the onset of the global pandemic that UNESCO in March launched the COVID-19 Global Education Coalition in March 2020, a multi-sector partnership between the UN family, civil society organizations, media and IT partners to design and deploy innovative solutions that can help developing nations countries tackle content and connectivity gaps, and facilitate inclusive learning opportunities for children and youth during this unwelcome period of disruption in education.

Before we delve deeper into the topic, let’s understand what Data science is. It is an interdisciplinary field that uses scientific principles, theories, techniques, algorithms and software technologies and systems to extract information, knowledge and insights from large amounts of structured and unstructured data banks. Once extracted, data science applies knowledge and actionable insights from data across a broad range of application domains.

Data Science in Education

With a large amount of educational data handy, Data Scientists have the leverage of discovering innovative applications of Data Science in Education. Additionally, big data analysis helps in understanding the real problems as it holds a real picture up. The readily available student data in the world has the potential to serve as the fodder that can run the mill and bring out innovative solutions that can benefit the education sector, especially in parts where the status is below average.

Some of the Machine Learning algorithms used by data scientists are Random forest, logistic regression, decision trees, support vector machines, etc. Although, there are not many applications of Data Science in Education yet.
But, there are still many unexplored use cases of Data Science that might result in the success of the Education field.

"Education empowers communities and helps them pave the way out of poverty. "

Here is a list of some of the advantages of Data Science in uplifting the status of Education in developing parts of the world:

1. Improve Adaptive Learning

The uniqueness in every child results in every child developing a different way of learning things. It is a difficult task for any educational institute to apply methods that can deal with every child. This is where adaptive learning comes in that promotes singular yet personalised experience for every child. So, teachers can discover the abilities of their students and apply optimal teaching techniques, Data Scientists provide the required support via technology and innovation.

2. Better Parent Involvement

The application of Data science in the form of analytic methods by teachers, also helps parents stay informed about their child’s performance in sports, arts etc. This information proves to be helpful, as the parents can keep an eye on their child’s activities. The analysis also helps educational institutes take better care of their students.

3. Better Assessment of Teachers

Data Science in Education empowers the administrators to supervise the activities and teaching methods of the teachers. Based on such analysis and the resultant data gathered helps them in identifying the most effective teaching methodologies and improve the same for better results. The resultant data can be analyzed in different ways to draw some meaningful insights that show the strengths and weaknesses of the teachers. This helps them improve accordingly.
For this purpose, the analysis is done on the data collected in an educational setup like student attendance records, their term results, feedback from parents and teachers etc.

4. Improve Student’s Performance

Data Science in Education helps educational institutes gain central control over the complete student data for evaluating the performance of the students and taking necessary actions.

5. Regular Updates in the Curriculum

Education is a field that’s always evolving, growing and expanding with time. However, in the case of developing nations this tends to happen at a snail’s pace. Data science has come to play the role of a good Samaritan here. Data Scientists, with the help of available global data have been able to find solutions based on which updated curriculums are being developed in an attempt to fill the increasing gap in the state of education in the developing and developed nations.

The above are just a few examples about the contribution of data scientists towards empowering the global student community at large and ones in developing nations to be particular. In the days to come, Data Science will play an important role than ever, as the world moves towards realising its dream of ‘education for all’.
